Are We Having Fun Yet?
Since 9/11, the airline industry has suffered record losses. Remarkably the only airline making a profit is the one having the most fun - Southwest Airlines. Southwest has proven that BIG FUN = BIG PROFITS!
They have a humor culture. You cannot work at Southwest unless you pass their humor test! Sourpusses need not apply. Being a road warrior for the last 8 years, I enjoy some levity on the plane. I like unconventional airplane announcements and the flight attendants goofing on each other. We still get peanuts for dinner - why not enjoy the experience with a healthy dose of humor?
The Great Harvest Bread Company hires great people and supports having fun at work. The employees enjoy toe-tapping music, casual dress (not uniforms), free bread and flexible work schedules. They have learned the secret to business success:
Happy employees give outrageous service and keep customers coming back for more.
Is your company a fun place to work? Do you incorporate humor in your corporate culture?
Here are some tips:
1. Everyone bring in a baby photo. Mount on a board with paper under it for others to write in identity.
2. Circulate comics, funny jokes, stories.
3. Put a fun toy on employees' desks (slinky, clacking teeth, bubbles).
4. Instead of a meeting, once a month schedule a "fun day" off site. Bowling, movies, go-carts, video arcade.
5. Create funny ad campaigns
To break the doldrums and stimulate creative thinking, at one office the manager announced a contest. Five teams were formed. The assignment was to come out with an ad campaign for Viagra using familiar ad lines we all recognize. For example: "Viagra - Expensive but worth it." "Viagra - Breakfast of Champions."
6. Have your sales team brainstorm funny lyrics to a familiar song.
To the tune of "Let It Snow"
Oh the weather outside frightful,
But the customer is just delightful.
With each upgrade my commission will show,
Let it grow, let it grow, let it grow.
Employees are happiest where there is an atmosphere of fun. Happy employees love their work and give outrageous service to your customers. What better investment is there?
